Why Big Brands Don’t Support Movie Project In Nigeria-YOMI FASH-LANSO

Yomi Fash Lanso is one of the A-list actors who cut his teeth in the Yoruba genre of the Nigeria movie industry. The gangling actor has been able to calve a niche of uniqueness for himself in the industry little wonder tongues have wag on his personality as the proud and arrogant type. In this interview with Faith Irabor, the graduate of the University of Lagos who just featured in an English movie spoke on what he perceives as problems plaguing the movie industry generally. You would enjoyed the chat.
What’s been happening to you of late?
It’s still the same profession that you’ve always known me for that I still do.
Yeah but it’s been a while since we saw your face in movies unlike before when you’re virtually in 70% of the movies released?
Yes you’re right, I am presently on break, am resting though that’s not to say that I have not done some movies of late.
Which was the last one you did before going on break?
I think the title is Omo Okunrin Kan.
Was it produced by you?
No o, me I am not yet capable to be a producer, I am a full time actor, when the time is right I will produce my own movies. Mind you it’s not because I don’t have what it takes but I choose not to join the band wagon yet.
But why is this so in the Yoruba industry unlike the English sector where we can count producers?
Yes, you’re right and it’s true that everybody even a new comer wants to produce and there is no other thing than the lack of structure. Like I tell people, we don’t have an industry yet, we are only deceiving ourselves. As far as Nigeria is concerned, the motion pictures industry does not have structure yet and that’s why anybody can just come and produce one junk movie and get out. Assuming there is an appropriate structure, I tell you it’s on that platform that everybody would ride, this way people would climb the ladder before assuming the position of a producer. One thing people don’t understand is that film producing is not a child’s play. I always say this despite the fact that I have done a film producing course well over nine years ago where I got my certificate as a certified film producer, yet I have not shot a movie not because I can’t but because I feel the time is not right. Let me even ask, what experience have we garnered as actors before jumping to say that we’re producers?  Film producing is not as easy as our people here are making it look. Like a friend of mine would always say, if you watch Nigeria home videos, it would teach you how not to make a film and I tell you, I have borrowed that word from him and let it serve me as a guide. When you watch it as an aspiring producer, you’d know that yes this is not how to make a movie. That’s the reason why I just sit and watch most of these movies.
Then again don’t you think you people also need to work on the subtitling?
Yeah, it’s very terrible my sister but there is honestly nothing I can do because I am not a producer, all that concerns me is to act and get out. It’s the duty of the post production and you would see their names on the end credit. It’s the duty of the so called marketers who are so redundant and myopic in thinking to know that our subtitling is poor and should do something about it as the marketers who would sell the films. They are supposed to ensure that final touches are put into these movies before pushing it out to the market.
Why are you seen as an expensive and arrogant actor because I have heard a lot of people say this?
Yeah, it’s good that way.  Whatever comes cheap lacks value. It is when you give yourself a kind of platform that people would say all sorts of things. The most important thing is for you to believe in yourself and when you do, God Himself would believe in you, so nobody can ride you. When they say am arrogant, fine so be it, it’s not arrogant but pride, it means you pride yourself. Like King Sunny Ade would always say “whosoever doesn’t give you money, clothes have no right to claim that you’re an arrogant type”. My philosophy is “once Fash is still delivering, they should pay!”
Then you’re known for wearing different hairstyles and not having a particular look?
Yeah, I do that a lot. I could go bald, do dreadlocks, and keep full hair. I actually pattern my facial look after the character I am playing in a movie. I believe every actor should, even if the producer or director did not tell you that this is the characterization, you should, if you want to have substance, you need to give your look that character matters. But when you’re seen playing different roles with the same looks and shape of face then you’re not acting anymore! You’re yourself!
What’s your educational background?
Let’s just say I went to primary and secondary school like every other normal person but I am a graduate of the University of Lagos.
Can you still remember when you started acting and perhaps the first movie you did?
I can’t remember to be sincere though I started acting professionally in February 1995.
Then again let’s talk about your wife and kids because not much seems to be known about them?
Yeah, you’re right, I don’t bring my family into my career and that’s why I try to keep them from public glare. But I am happily married and my wife and kids are doing very fine and I think that’s all I will want to say about that aspect of my life.
Where are you from?
I am a Nigerian (laughs) from Ogun State.
Who’re your favourites among your contemporaries in the movie industry?
I give it to Funsho Adeolu any day and there’s a guy coming up and I love working with him anytime any day and that’s Gabriel Afolayan, he acts from the inside and we also have Ibrahim Chata, he’s also a fantastic actor.
YomI Fash Lanso has become a brand whose market value over time has not depreciated, can you share the secret that has sustained the brand apart from God?
Like I tell people, if I want to go into any business I don’t know of, I would go and learn it from those who are perfectionists in that area aside learning it in school. I would go to those who know it to sensitize and teach me the path to follow, those who would tell me what I stand to gain if I stand here or there. As an actor, there’s what we call field benefits of you placing yourself in some certain places. Like I tell my producer friends that as long as they still keep using brands, I mean all these soft drinks, those soaps in their jobs for free, the manufacturers would not give you money because you’ve already cheapened yourself by giving them free adverts and quote me, you won’t see a Yomi Fash Lanso hold such brands in any movie because I know as an actor my right must stand. As a matter of fact I don’t go for names when I am buying things but rather quality things that cost money, so you would not catch me dead wearing names. And until we realize this, the public won’t know our worth, that’s just it.
People say you don’t honour events, so how do you relax?
I am an indoor person actually and aside that, it’s not as if I don’t go to events, I only choose to go to meaningful events that would add value to my person.
On a final note, any message to your fans?
Yeah, I love and appreciate their supports and prayers for me. I promise to keep making them proud. God bless them all.
It’s been nice chatting with you?
Same here.

Lagbaja Re-Unites With Beloved Vocalist, Ego Ogbaro

It is no longer news that, the mask musician, Bisade Ologunde a.k.a Lagbaja and his beloved ex back-up singer, Ego Ehinacho are hot and cold owing to the fall-out of their one time blossoming relationship turned sour that saw the talented female vocalist walking down the aisle with one of the band boys.
You would recalled that, aside the fact that, Ego remains one of the best things to happen to Lagbaja`s musical career and vice versa, the duo was rumoured to be seeing each other and the whispering was so strong that, Lagbaja`s wife was said to have compelled her husband to send her away if nothing amorous is between them as being speculated.
Though privileged sources who know the duo even more than themselves when the going was good have confided in this office of a certain incident that happened at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife years back. Parts of the reputable confidants of the two-some that were at this historic meeting are Biola Awosemo, a.k.a Oodua-a renowned Theatre Artist and lecturer at OAU, also popular and respected practitioners such as Kola Oyewo and Peter Fatomilola were not left out at the episode that seemed to further tell Ego what the future holds for her in the relationship.
But we would be respecting their privacy by not telling the story today based on confidentiality, rather what we think will interest you is what transpired at a recent event where Lagbaja and Ego re-united for performance.
It was at the fourth edition of Lamina Foundation-Wole Soyinka`s Prize for Literature in Africa where Lagbaja and his new band members were on the stand as the major musician of the evening and just slightly into the middle of the show, Ego made an appearance into the hall of the Civic Centre venue on Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island, Lagos in company of a friend.
And as she was going to help herself to a seat, Lagbaja beckoned on her in a manner suggestive of begging to come on stage, she was reluctant at first but she got a push from her friend who gave a nod, that was how Ego mounted the stage and shared same mic with Lagbaja as they both performed, “Never Far Away” and some of their old numbers bringing back past memories and rendering other band members especially the new girl redundant.
You could tell that, there was friction because it was unlike Ego, she couldn’t really adlib like those times when they were together and even the whole episode could tell from the faces of the audience that, it was just a patch up after all. Lagbaja had to save the day by quickly announcing to the audience, “Ladies and gentlemen, Ego Ogbaro for you” and the audience applauded her as she took her seat.

A Word For Mabel Makun-Comedian AY`s Better-Half

Mabel Makun, the very beautiful wife of popular comedian, Ayo Makun of AY fame definitely have something off her sleeves, it`s either the fair complexioned woman is looking for cheap publicity or that she wants to be noticed probably by stakeholders in the movie industry for a possible role.
Are you asking why? Of course this is same question people asked the other day when Ayo Makun`s wife threw caution to the wind by flouting matrimonial rules, she was clad in a provocative long dress that exhibited her mammary glands as if it were for sell.
It was at one of her husband`s colleagues wedding shindig and trust comedians, they had a field day savouring boobs as they threatened to forcefully bolt-out of the tube dress Mabel was wearing.
No one can take away the fact that, Mrs. Makun is a stylish paragon of beauty but such lovely dress goes for an exclusive cocktail party, dinner, red carpet event with high caliber of people in attendance not an Owambe party like a traditional marriage. The offensive dress is indeed not befitting of a married woman and mother in such a setting.
At the event, Mrs. Makun was actually the cynosure of all eyes but it was a tale of different strokes for different folks; whilst the single ladies were envious of her nice, cute, curvy and slim shape, the married must have been so disappointed at the way she exposed her boobs to the attraction of their husbands spoiling the moods at the party and trust the single men, they feasted on her chest and the oranges almost fell-off the tube.

Anxiety Over Ebenezer Obey`s Desperate Agility

Have you been opportune to witness the performance of Juju music maestro, Chief Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi of late? If not, then you need to read this piece and take your time to look at these pictures. No doubt, Chief Ebenezer Obey is one of Nigeria`s musicians of our time and he was about to make history when he told the world then that he was quitting secular music for God`s vineyard.
At that time, we don’t need any soothsayer to tell us that, the man has made enough money to actually retire which was one of the reasons he contemplated quitting in the first place anyway, aside the avalanche of properties which people in the know said were everywhere in the major cities, Ebenezer Obey`s bank account was said to be so impressively fat as well.
His decision to retire from active musical performance was applauded by family, friends, teeming fans and even foes as the talented music star withdrew from public glare to take over activities at his church, Decross International, a church project he has nurtured over years with headquarters at Mulero area of Agege, Lagos.
Before his eventual retirement, one of Obey`s sons, Tolu has already taken his style of music, in fact the youngman has started enjoying the limelight and goodwill bestowed by his father`s popularity as a man of the high and caliber whilst another of his son, Folarin is a renowned pianist and Pastor who runs the Decross church, at least this availed him the opportunity to enjoy his retirement because he has been able to position his children for the future.
But alas, just about 2 to 3 years into his retirement, words began flying around that Ebenezer Obey is broke, the man was said to be so broke that he almost didn’t have anything left; one of his sons (namewitheld) was allegedly said to have encountered some fast thinkers a.k.a 419ners who shaved him off his father`s belongings including hard-earned life savings and properties, the situation was so pathetic and critical that, good spirited Nigerians such as Otunba Mike Adenuga Jr. were said to have come to his rescue before the man was able to get his groove back.
According to sources, the Globacom Chairman, Otunba Mike Adenuga was the saving grace then who bailed him out with N2m and a state of the art car, otherwise things would have gone out of hand, this we gathered was the major reason the retired Ebenezer Obey decided to come back to stage leaving pastoral job for secular life again.
There`s no doubting the fact that, the legendary musician, Ebenezer Obey knows that he`s no more fit for stage performance but for the need to pay some bills he wouldn’t have been going through the harrowing experience of mounting the stage at this phase of his life.
Concerned minds who have witnessed the man performing of late have not just allayed their fears but have offered blunt advice for his children to savage the situation, the man who`s nudging his 70s officially is obviously tired of climbing the stage.
According to them, his physical appearance at the final burial ceremony of the late father of Iyalode of Gbaguraland, Chief Mrs. Adunni Bankole was nothing but a pitiable sight, the man was practically tottering like a toddler after being helped to alight from his car by retinue of aides who held his walking stick and carefully led him to a corner at the event`s venue before being ushered on stage.
His poor sight is not helping matter as well and it has gone so bad that, he now sits on stage while they read names of important guests to be song-praise to his hearing, these was how he managed at the Bakares` burial in Abeokuta around May, 2012 and recently at Teju Baby Face` traditional engagement that held at 10 Degrees events centre, Ikeja, Lagos where his agile heir-apparent, Tolu was so embarrassed at the fall out of things, it was all written in his eyes that, all is definitely not well. Please take your time to savour the pictures. A word they say…

Leadway Assurance In Trouble As Distinct Boss, Oyebolu Drags IATA To Court

What looks like a legal tussle of the decade might be looming between industry giants in the aviation circle as a young man, Segun Oyebolu who runs a promising traveling agency, Distinct Travels & Tours has vowed to fight for his rights, by any means necessary.
The dynamic man who`s one of the stakeholders in the aviation industry has dragged the International Air Transport Association, IATA to court joining one of Nigeria`s topflight insurance companies, Leadway Assurance COMPANY Limited headed by a seasoned insurance guru, Oye Hassan Odukale in a civil suit with No.: FHC/IKJ/CS/196/2012 claiming a whopping N1 billion.
According to Oyebolu, the International Air Transport Association in conjunction with Odukale`s Leadway Assurance have been alleged to have connived to frustrate his company, Distinct Travels out of business through series of unfounded allegations capable of soiling his company`s image.
We gathered reliably that, for reasons best known to the duo of IATA and Leadway management, Distinct`s efforts to join the league of IATA agents and move to the next level have been severally hindered based on unproved allegation against the firm.
Oyebolu who knows his onions had in April this year, 2012 sought the intervention of an international arbitrator in Sweden in line with the rules guiding IATA operations worldwide but just as he thought the coast was getting clearer, IATA which already had a directive from the Sweden based arbitrator referred the matter to Leadway for reactivation of its (Distinct) default insurance policy which was not part of it at all.
In Oyebolu`s view, “the fight to kill the business model of his firm has been fierce because fundamentally, unlike other agencies, it is only Distinct Travels that has maintained a very close business relations with other Nigeria airlines that are non-IATA members. Without an open declaration, IATA is using its monopolistic power as the main platform for the travel industry to direct work against people and organizations whose activities can significantly help the local aviation industry. He said.
Quoting him further, Oyebolu said the killing of the local industry will sufficiently ensure that European airlines continue to dominate the sector. In recent history, there have been significant efforts by IATA to work with local unpatriotic elements to frustrate Nigerian-owned airlines and they are daily working to ground every Nigerian-owned airlines by indirectly frustrating their business model. Most African countries` local aviation is in disarray-no thanks to European controlled IATA whose chief mission is to entrench and expand the capture and domination of African Travel Market by the likes of BA, Virgin Atlantic, KLM, Air France, Lufthansa and others.
It is on this premise that, Distinct Travels has gone to court for a possible redress and some of its prayers are: an order declaring the suspension and or withdrawal of its rights and privileges as a Travel Agency with the ability to trade by IATA on 23rd, January, 2012 without prior notice as unlawful, unconstitutional, ultra vires, null and void ab initio for same not having been done in compliance with relevant laws guiding its operations and another order declaring Leadway Assurance` continued refusal to reactivate/revalidate its default insurance policy certificate without just cause as unlawful, unconstitutional, ultra vires, null and void ab initio and an abuse of power.
The plaintiffs, Segun Oyebolu and his firm Distinct Travels are claiming over a billion Naira in the law suit. Meanwhile in our facts finding mission, we tried to get in touch with Leadway Assurance management for their own side of the story, severally we were asked to hold-on for the woman in charge of IATA, Bunmi Fisher when we rang their switch board, 01-2700700, but after about 10 minutes of the transfer call, the phone cut. We however tried again but they kept burning our call credits without a meaningful response and no one calls back until we went to press last week.
We`re hoping to talk to Bunmi Fisher sometime this week.
