It is no longer news that, the
mask musician, Bisade Ologunde a.k.a Lagbaja and his beloved ex back-up singer,
Ego Ehinacho are hot and cold owing to the fall-out of their one time
blossoming relationship turned sour that saw the talented female vocalist
walking down the aisle with one of the band boys.
You would recalled that, aside
the fact that, Ego remains one of the best things to happen to Lagbaja`s
musical career and vice versa, the duo was rumoured to be seeing each other and
the whispering was so strong that, Lagbaja`s wife was said to have compelled
her husband to send her away if nothing amorous is between them as being
speculated.
Though privileged sources who
know the duo even more than themselves when the going was good have confided in
this office of a certain incident that happened at the Obafemi Awolowo
University, Ile Ife years back. Parts of the reputable confidants of the
two-some that were at this historic meeting are Biola Awosemo, a.k.a Oodua-a
renowned Theatre Artist and lecturer at OAU, also popular and respected
practitioners such as Kola Oyewo and Peter Fatomilola were not left out at the
episode that seemed to further tell Ego what the future holds for her in the
relationship.
But we would be respecting their
privacy by not telling the story today based on confidentiality, rather what we
think will interest you is what transpired at a recent event where Lagbaja and
Ego re-united for performance.
It was at the fourth edition of
Lamina Foundation-Wole Soyinka`s Prize for Literature in Africa where Lagbaja
and his new band members were on the stand as the major musician of the evening
and just slightly into the middle of the show, Ego made an appearance into the
hall of the Civic Centre venue on Ozumba Mbadiwe Street, Victoria Island, Lagos
in company of a friend.
And as she was going to help
herself to a seat, Lagbaja beckoned on her in a manner suggestive of begging to
come on stage, she was reluctant at first but she got a push from her friend
who gave a nod, that was how Ego mounted the stage and shared same mic with
Lagbaja as they both performed, “Never Far Away” and some of their old numbers
bringing back past memories and rendering other band members especially the new
girl redundant.
You could tell that, there was
friction because it was unlike Ego, she couldn’t really adlib like those times
when they were together and even the whole episode could tell from the faces of
the audience that, it was just a patch up after all. Lagbaja had to save the
day by quickly announcing to the audience, “Ladies and gentlemen, Ego Ogbaro
for you” and the audience applauded her as she took her seat.
Lagbaja made Ego. The impact of a great tutor such as the one Lagbaja gave to EGo can not be over emphasized. She lost all when she left. The natural talents are still there but she can't be as good as that again because Lagbaja was the force behind all she did. I love Ego so much.Lagbaja I wish I could do a single with you. God bless you.
