German Foreign Minister, Westerwelle Eulogises Late Literary Icon, Achebe


The death of Africa`s greatest literary icon and the author of the highly celebrated novel, Things Fall Apart, Professor Albert Chinualumogu Achebe has no doubt shaken the four walls of the world with torrents of condolences and eulogies pouring in from many international figures.

The exceptionally blessed poet and award winning writer whose work "Things Fall Apart," provided a counterpoint to the colonial depiction of Africa and helped give voice to a continent died last week at a ripe age of 82.

Amongst international diplomat who appreciates the literary giant is the German Foreign Minister, Guido Westerwelle who recently extolled the virtues of  the great icon. In his words, Guido Westerwelle made the following statements regarding the
death of the Nigerian writer Chinua Achebe:

''A great world of literature has gone with Chinua Achebe. In his famous novels such as 'Things fall apart' he vividly told of the historical upheavals of African readers around the world. We grieve with the families of the author and with the whole of Nigeria at the loss of a great personality and great writer."

The Nigerian writer, Chinua Achebe, died last week at the age of 82 years. He gained international fame through his novels ‘Things Fall Apart’ (known as ''Das Alte stürzt'' in German), ‘Arrow of God’ and others. His books have been translated into over 50 languages. In 2002 he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade.
